Does anyone know the meaning or origin of the Jewish surname Balamut
or Balamuth? Is it related to Malamud?

Thank you.

i don't have a definitive answer, if there is such a thing, but the root of MALAMUD
is the word "melamed", which means teacher (usually of children) . it could shift
in pronunciation, but i would guess that BALAMUT, assuming an ashkenazi,
yiddish-speaking environment, would more likely be formed from "ba'al amud" or
"ba'al amot", meaning man of status or means or values.

but that's just my guess.

Close enough, Tom.

Balamut in Russian means a troublemaker.

I think Tom made a good point. But I would translate 'amud' in another way. A baal
amud could be, like baal tefilla, a person who is regularly sent to be the shaliach
tsibur, the one who leads prayers at the synagogue. Amud=the desc/lecturn where
this person has his siddur/prayerbook.
