The Belchatow Shtetl CO-OP is thrilled to announce that the indices for
another LDS microfilm (#1713997) have been added to the Jewish Records
Indexing Database!! Even with all the celebrations and millenium hoopla,
the wonderful JRI-Poland quality control team managed to check this
spreadsheet, turn it into a database, and put it on the JRI-Poland website
TODAY January 1, 2000!!! The indices for the birth, marriage, and death
records (1112 individual names) from holdings of the Mormon Library for the
years 1881-1888 are now searchable online. This brings the total number of
on-line individual names from Belchatow to 5,980!! Indices for the years
1828/1843 and for the years 1875-1880 are being completed now! This work
has also helped find the ancestors of Jeffrey Bornstein. See
http://www.geocities.com/seflaum/Bornstein.html.
The international team of volunteers who have worked so hard to get these
indices on-line for you are Steve Rabinowitz, MD, (New York, USA), Dr.
Lester Bilsky (Arkansas, USA), Pawel Brunon Dorman (Warsaw, Poland), Miriam
S. Deitcher (Ohio, USA), Alan Frishman (New York, USA), Jenny Jackson
(Victoria, Australia), and Roni Seibel Liebowitz (New York, USA). Special
thanks to all these volunteers who take time from their busy schedules to
volunteer for this project. Thanks to Hadassah Lipsius, Michael Tobias,
Stanley Diamond, and the JRI-Poland quality control team for their support
and patience. The work being done by the Belchatow Shtetl CO-OP volunteers
was started in October 1998. In less than 2 years, the Shtetl CO-OP work
will be complete!! The next phase of our work is part of an initiative
announced at the July 1998 during the Annual Seminar on Jewish Genealogy in
Los Angeles. Under the exciting JRI-Poland / Polish State Archives
initiative, indices are being created for those Jewish vital records of
Poland not available in the LDS microfilms.
In the case of Belchatow, the records to be indexed are from 1889 to 1896
or possibly a few years later. Since there are no microfilms of these
records, the data entry is handled by professionals in Poland from the
index pages purchased from the Polish State Archives. The registers are
stored in the Piotrkow Trybunalski branch of the Polish State Archives and
I have volunteered to be Town Leader for Belchatow for this project under
Archive Coordinator, Gloria Freund.
Keep up to date with our progress indexing the records by visiting our
webpage on the JRI-Poland Shtetl CO-OP site <<http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/belchatow.htm>>. Thanks to Steve Zedeck
for posting our updates. Belchatow is at 51"22'N/19"23'E in the Piotrkow
Gubernia, Lodz Province. It is located 26.7 miles (50 km) south of Lodz
and 13 miles west of Piotrkow Trybunalski.
Please contact me for information about Belchatow and ways in which you can
help support this project. Thanks to those of you who have made financial
contributions to support this effort. The work of all the JRI-Poland
Shtetl CO-OPs will benefit all who are researching their Jewish ancestry.
Get involved!!! We were all novices when we started!
Best Wishes,
Roni
