X-No-archive: yes
According to my great uncle's scribbled note on his family's yichus he notes that
his wife's mother was a descendant of Reb. Chaim of Volozhin but does not mention
the link.
According to a diary written by my great grandmother's brother, Reb Chaim Dov
KANTOR of Jerusalem and Moshav Shfeya near Zichron Yacov, he and his siblings were
born in Karlin (Pinsk) in the latter half of the 19th cent. to Shlomo and Sarah
Hinde KANTOR. Sarah's father was a Yosef, who was a/the Chazzan of Karlin. There is
also a rumor that Reb Itzaleh, Reb Chaim of Volozhin's son was their "unterfirer"-
I understand that an "unterfirer" were usually the parents of a bride and groom but
that Sarah's mother's parents had died before her wedding and possibly during the
lifetime of Reb. Itzaleh, he filled in for his deceased daughter? (nowhere written,
just rumors)
Another rumor is that Reb, Leib YAFFE , Rav of Or Yehuda, and a former student of
Volozhin, told to a member of the WEISFISH family,(who was also a descendant of
reb. Chaim Dov of Shfeya,) that he could testify that he ( Chaim Dov) was a
descendant of the Volozhin family.
Having seen some of the various family trees of Reb. Chaim of Volozhin published, I
have not found a link to that family. There is a hint to the story of Reb. Itzaleh
being "unterfirer" in the fact that Reb.Itzaleh did bury a daughter and son-in-law
(LANDAU) but in the published trees the link is not mentioned. It could very well
be that not all children were included in Rabbinic family tree, especially
those who were not Rabbis or females married to Rabbis.
If anyone has personal data on the above or can forward this letter to
authors of the Volozhin I would be grateful.
TIA
Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov
