In fact, Ola (we might write it in English as Ol'a or Olya, with the
apostrophe signifying a soft sound) is a very common diminutive or
affectionate form of the name Olga. Most people who name their daugters
Olga would refer to them as Ola, reserving "Olga" for scolding or anger.
Otherwise, Olga would be used in more formal situations.
Other commonly-used affectionate forms of Olga include Olinka and Olichka.
These latter two would most likely be used when females (mother-daughter,
friends, sisters) address each other, with Ola being used by everyone.
My Ukrainian girlfriend is Olga (Ola), which is why I'm so certain about
this name.
All the best,
C. Dunn
