Dear Colleagues,

My father and his brothers all emigrated from the Tarnopol region of
Ukraine between 1910 and 1920. All lived in Manhattan or the Bronx and
belonged to the Knights of Pythias.

The family cemetery plot is in the Stuyvesant Memorial Association section
(which was organized in September 1941) of Beth Israel Cemetery in
Woodbridge, NJ. I am fairly certain that the family cemetery plots were
purchased from the Knights of Pythias.

Can someone tell me about the Knights of Pythias, any possible connection
to the Tarnopol area, and the relationship of the Knights to the
Stuyvesant Memorial Association.

Thanks in advance.

The Knights of Pythias was a Jewish fraternal organization, much like the
Catholic Knights of Columbus.

There were many lodges in the Knights, and it appears that you are
referring to only one of them.

I think the Knights of Pythias still has a headquarters in New York City,
and you could probably get more information from them.

My grandparents were very active in the Knights of Pythias in Bridgeport,
Connecticut. I have picture of "balls" (formal dances) and clippings of
functions. I am not clear if this was tied to a synagogue or if all who
participated were Jewish.
The peole in the clippings were:
Saul SCHULLEY, Past Chancellor
A.E. NISHBALL, Past Chancellor
Milton POTASH, vice Chancellor
Herman ABRAMSON
Daniel SEGALL
Maxwell E. BROSUK
James H. BLOOM
Simon E. BROSLER

I also have some info on the Sisters of this fraternal order. They, too
were very active.

I'm not at all sure that the Knights of Pythias was just a Jewish
organization. My mother was not Jewish, dispite which I always
considered myself to be Jewish although not religous. She was a (very)
lapsed Methodist from upstate New York, near Ithica. I have, from among
old family papers from that side a program for a Knights of Pythias
Ball, in 1870 something, sponsored by the Lodge in Freeville New York.
I am almost certian that the Jewish population in Freeville was as close
to zero as you can get in that period. Q.E.D.
