Hello Everyone.

I am currently trying to establish my genealogy and I
have found that the surname Perez may be of Jewish
origin.  I have visited a few forums already
(jewishgen.org) but I still can not reach a
conclusion. I am confused since a few people in the
discussion boards at jewishgen.org emphasize as
"non-Jewish Perez" or "Spanish Perez." It is mentioned
that Perez was originally a Spanish surname. On the
other hand, Perez is a Biblical name too. Any help
would be appreciated.

P.S. I am native from Guadalajara, Mexico.
Thanks for your attention.

Nelson Perez.

There certainly were Spanish Jews with the name Perez.
I don't know if you can jump to the conclusion that
your name is of Jewish origin, however. Establishing
a connection may be very difficult, especially since
this was something that people tried to keep hidden
for so many centuries.

But you might look at
http://users.erols.com/gascue-maymi/perez%20info.htm
or the on-line Jewish Encyclopedia article
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=191&letter=P&search=Perez
for example.

=PERETZ, the Hebrew Peh - Resh - Tzadi, is indeed a
biblical name and the origin for the paternal basis
surname. The surname is very common amongst Moroccan
Jewish families who are most likely of Sepharadic
origin, but it can be found also in Jewish communities
of East Europe (I suppose that they too may
had some Sepharadic ties)

Best regards,
Udi Cain, Jerusalem.

I am happy to invite you to my genealogy web site:

==== Just in order to clarify. As a lot of surnames
that are possibly Jewish (for instance Meyer),
the name Perez can have two different origins. As Udi
Cain explains, as a Jewish surname Perez has a biblical
origine. When it is a spanish name, it just means
"son of Pedro" (see Notes on Spanish Genealogy,

http://home.pi.be/~p4u00071/rancel/fili-eng.html).

If there are so many Spanish Jews with this name
(and few among East European Jews) one could think
that it is because of this possible confusion.

Anyway the only way to know if your Perez are Jews
is to research your genealogy....
