Dear Jewish Genners,

Can anyone tell me if the name Gussie for a woman is a nickname, or the
origins of the name?

I am having a hard time locating Gussie CHEIFETZ, The second wife of my
GGF, and I am wondering if it is because this is not her given name, but a
nickname.

Thanks in advance,
B Miller

The only Gussie I knew, my Romanian-born grandmother, was originally
Gisela (Yiddish-mangled from French Giselle). There are other
possibilities, of course, e.g. Guta/Gitl, Augusta.

My Maternal Grandmother was Gussie Weinberg Berman. She was born in
Chattanooga, Tenn. The family only knew her as Gussie but she told her
youngest daughter several times her name was originally Augusta. We
cannot find out if this is really true. She was married to Gus (Gershon)
Berman from Grovno??? (original family name Bergman) who became a US
citizen in 1919. They were 1st cousins. Judy Rich Viness Atlanta, Ga.

My grandmother's name was Gussie Friedman married to Jack Roth (Eliahu

My husband's grandmother (Russian) was called Gussie but the name on
her naturalization papers turned out to be Golde. However she had a
sister-in-law (Austrian) who was also Gussie and her name was
Gertrude. Good luck hunting because I don't think there was any rhyme
or reason to the new names they chose, why else would Alta become Al
for one great grandfather and Abe for another.

On my tree, our Gussie began as Gittel (Poland, 1889), then became
Augusta (New Jersey, 1900), and then finally Gussie (New Jersey, 1920).

Gussie is indeed a name of a woman. The recent TV movie of Ruth Gruber's
saving of 1000 refugees in Oswego, NY depicted Ruth's mother as "Sarah",
but in reality, she was my relative, Gussie Rockower Gruber.
