I am trying to find out what would be the Hebrew and Yiddish equivelents
for the name Celia. My paternal great grandmother's English name was
Celia. A relative thought that her Hebrew name would have been Checka.
Do any of you know what the Hebrew and Yiddish eqivelents for Celia would
be?
I know that Eve is Chava in Hebrew. Does anyone reading this know what
may be a Yiddish equivelent to Eve. Thank you very much for any
information or insight any of you can give me.
Sincerely,

As for Eve, Hava or Chava, that name does not change in Yiddish. The Hebrew
Hava or Chava is the same in Yiddish. Here again, all Eves are not
necessarily Havas. Some parents could name their daughters Eve simply
because they liked the name.

Chava is the same in Yiddish, i.e., Yiddish uses the Hebrew name "as is"
(sometimes in a yiddish diminutive form Chava-le)

Could be any number of names. As stated innumerable times on this list
(people must be tired of my constant reiterations!), there are in general
no Hebrew/Yiddish "equivalents" for European names, unless those names
were Hebrew to start with (as is true, for instance, of all names taken
from the Hebrew Bible and many of those found in the New Testament too).
Nor is Celia the equivalent of any Hebrew name. (The only true European
equivalent for any Hebrew name is a European-language name that actually
translates the Hebrew name, i.e. means exactly the same thing as the Hebrew
name -- such as Wolf for Ze'ev or Leo for Aryeh.)
In the case of Celia, one possibility would be the similar-sounding name
Zillah (pronounced Tsillah). She was the third woman actually named in the
Bible -- one of the two wives of Lemekh in Genesis chapter 4: A. One
Yiddish possibility is Tsirel. But, as I said, Celia is not in any
meaningful sense an "equivalent" of any of the above -- it's merely a
"soundalike" or "match" to them.

My wife, known in English as Cylia, has a Yiddish given name of Tziril
(sp?), after her gm; the fond name by which she was normally addressed
by her parents was Tzila, and the Polish fond name by which she was
addressed by her aunt was Tzalusha (sp?).

It seems that the closest Hebrew name to Celia is Tsila, wife of Lemech.
A biblical name (Genesis:4:19)
