Dear Jewish Genners,

I hope someone can help me identify a synagogue in Manhattan which may
help me with my genealogical research.

My ggrandfather, Alta/Akiba SITRON (b. abt. 1868, possibly in
Ciechanowiec, Poland, d. June 11, 1915, Manhattan)came to this country
in about 1899 and lived at 160 Henryt Street, in Manhattan. I'm told
that there was a synagogue "across the street" from his home, of which
he was a founder. There may even be a plaque in the synagogue bearing
his name. Can anyone tell me the name of the synagogue, whether it
still exists and, if so, any people I could contact there?

Thanks in advance.

Hi!
According to the 1910-11 City Directory, the following Jewish houses of
worship were listed:
(Note: I have checked my spelling very carefully; the names are spelled
as listed.)
By the way, there were 202 synogogues in Manhatten and the Bronx in 1911.
I suspect many were in homes, which was the case in Toronto during the
same time.

Adas Jacob Anshel Slabodke, 193 Henry
Ahavath Txedek Anshel Tinkowich, 92 Henry
Anshel Moskve, 156 Henry
Benla Pishhl Tsuwo Anshl Anixter, 136 Henry
Congreration Ohavy Sholom, 94 Henry
Maskower of Polen, 203 Henry
Shaari Zedek, 38 Henry

Here is the block breakdown of Henry. It ran from 14 Oliver east to Grand.
