Response to Yishea or Ovshiy?
Yishea and Ovshiy are among the many Yiddish versions or nicknames for
the name Yehoshua, the root name of Joshua.
I have never seen the spellings Ovshiy or Yishea, but there are
similar spellings in the JewishGen Given Names Database for Ovsey in
Ukraine:
Legal/Hebrew: Yehoshua Gender: M Legal Origin: Exodus 17:9
Yiddish: Ishie / Shaie / Shaye / Yehoshue / Yehoyshue / Yeshie / Yeshiye
Yiddish Nickname: Amshey / Evshe / Eyshe / Hova / Hove / Hovshie /
Oshe / Oshiye / Ovsey / Ovshie / Oyshie / Shie / Shike / Shiye / Yashe
/ Yevsey / Yevshie / Yevsl
The Yiddish names and nicknames are different for each area of Russia.
Since you didn't specify where in Russia your ancestor was from, this
is the entry for Ovsey in Lithuania:
Legal/Hebrew: Yehoshua Gender: M Legal Origin: Exodus 17:9
Yiddish: Ehoshiya / Yehoshiya / Yehoshiye / Yeshue
Yiddish Origin: Hosheya --> Yehoshua, in Bible
Yiddish Nickname: Amshey / Eyshie / Ishie / Hashke / Haushl / Hoshiye
/ Hoshko / Hovsey / Hovshe / Hovshey / Oshaye / Osheye / Oshiye /
Osiye / Osyas / Ovshe / Ovshie / Shaye / Shie / Shika / Shike / Shiko
/ Shiye / Shue / Yeshiye / Yeshue / Yoshko / Yozl
Sometimes in order to get results from the Given Names Database, you
need to try alternative spellings or enter only part of the name.
