Subject: Project update: Transliteration of the 1912 Voter lists
for Grodno Gubernia.

The transliteration team has grown to 40 individuals, and nearly
all of the lists have been distributed. If you are not a
participant in this project, there are "only" about 5000 names
left for distribution. That number does not include the 5600
names from Bialystok District that Steven Zedeck (REIPP project)
and I will be allocating to those who have an interest in
Bialystok and surrounding towns. We are making smooth and
wonderful progress.

Already some results have come in. I have received already about
600 names, and I expect the volume to pick up considerably over
the next few weeks.

My aim is to have the project finished in time for the Summer
Seminar. Altogether, there are about 26,000 names to be
transliterated. Because each name includes the name of the father
(patronymic), these lists actually represent the names of close
to 50,000 individuals who lived in Grodno Gubernia in 1912 and
earlier. About 5% of the names on the list are non-Jewish, but
that makes little difference in the value of the project.
Volunteers should be willing to transliterate at a minimum 350
names. Full instructions are included. The lists are from
newspapers, so the print is rather easy to read and the letters
are easy to distinguish. The lists are in typeset Russian. The
information for each individual is his first and last names, his
father's name, and the district in Grodno Gubernia where he
resides (the lists are organized by district).

For a total beginner, it shouldn't take more than a few hours to
transliterate about 300 names, although it may be tiresome to do
them all at one time. In return, you will learn how to read
Russian phonetically, you will learn about Jewish names, and you
will be a part of a unique and valuable project in Jewish
Genealogy.

And its fun! When you do the transliteration and all of a sudden
a recognizable, Jewish name (i.e. "Yitzkhak-Leib, son of Abram
Leibson") appears, it's a great feeling!

The below-named individuals comprise the current transliteration
team:

use (their project includes an effort with our Jackie Ziff, the
"Bialystok initiative," to index the LDS records for Bialystok).
