Hi Mark,
Since this has to do with Yiddish transliteration, and may be relevant
to many who try to decipher names, I am sending this to the list as
well as to Mark personally.

Actually, it is the same surname on the stone. Way back when, the
sound for the English letter J (or the sound in gentleman) was created
using the three letter combination Dalet, Zayin, Shin. Modern
Hebrew would use a Gimel with an apostrophe.

So the Yiddish / Hebrew surname is Gerofsky, with a soft G --
practically identical to the Latin Gerufsky on the stone.

Hi - Please see the following gravestone on findagrave.com. The surname
listed in Hebrew on the gravestone, for the deceased man's father,
doesn't match the man's English surname. So I assume that the Hebrew
surname was the person's original surname. But I can't find any Hebrew
surname that sounds like the one that is written in Hebrew. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.
