My Great Grandfather Adolph K. DELEMOS immigrated from
Germany in the late 1800s. I know very little about him,
but what research I have done seems to show that the surname
"De Lemos" is most likely from Portugal, and that many
Jewish folks with that name lived in Germany in the 16th-19th
centuries, having fled from Portugal.
Anyone in this newsgroup familiar with that name or any
history related to it?
Thanks in advance for any information you might have.

Endnotes:
Information from the Danish Demographic Database, online searchable
database at http://ddd.dda.dk, FT 1787.
I'm working on "The Family Tree of the Danish Jews" for the Danish Jewish
Museum (to open next year) and I'am therefore transcribing all information
from all possible sources (printed genealogies, censuses, vital records,
nationalization records etc. etc). I have till now more than 30,000 persons
in my database, and I still have a lot of work ahead of me.
The project does not only focus on those who lived in Denmark, but all
those that emigrated, immigrated, disappeared never to be heard from
again, and descendants or ancestors of those who lived in Denmark for at
shorter or longer period of time. So I would be very grateful if you would
send me the information that you have, it might help me find out where to
find more information also here in Denmark.
Likewise I would be very grateful for all and any information about
persons or families which have connections to Denmark (also the Northern
part of Germany - Schleswig-Holstein) or relations to Danes.
I'll check for more DE LEMOSs and if I find any more about them, I will
let you know.
You could also subscribe to JewishGen’s Scandinavia SIG and ask if some of
the members there know more about the DE LEMOS family. Among the members
are a number from Northern Germany (that were once Danish), some
interested in the Virgin Islands and of course a lot from the Scandinavian
countries. Some of the members are far more experienced and knowledgeable
that I am, so it would be worth a try.
Best wishes

Elsebeth,
Thank you so much for the De Lemos information you provided.
My Great Grandfather from Germany, Adolph De Lemos immigrated
to New Jersey, and opened a small music publishing company. My
family never talked much about him and I never saw any of the
music. But I have recently discovered some copies of some of
the sheet music he published, and I am going to republish it.
At the same time, I am trying to trace his history. He arrived
here in the 1860s, eventually married "Augusta Sanders" and was
the father of my Grandmother. But she never talked about him nor
did my mother. So I am at a loss of even knowing where to start
to trace his history.
Any help, guidance or direction is certainly appreciated.
I know very little about tracing a family history.
Sincerely,
Mark

Many of the Sephardim moved around a lot in the 1600's and around that-the
ones who escaped were by and large international traders. There was a good
sized community in Hamburg by 1600, and I suppose that your Adolph De Lemos
was descended from one of the De Lemos family there; I am also descended
from that family.
Most of the records I have seen for the Sephardi in Hamburg are cemetery
records. There is a big research book (in German) discussing the community
and giving several family trees..
I would suggest that you check the Amsterdam records as well as anything
that you can find in Germany for his ancestors, as many Sephardi married in
Amsterdam although they were living elsewhere, and many seemed to move
back and forth. London is another possibility but their records do not go
back as far.
