Pesse, usually spelled Pessa, is a yiddish name spelled
peh-ayin-samekh-aleph. Another version is Pesha, spelled with shin instead
of samekh. To the best of my knowledge it does not correspond to any Hebrew
name (nor does it have a specific English equivalent, though Bessie was
often chosen as a sound-alike). Presumably the name Pessa/Pesha is of
Polish origin; it was the name of my maternal grandmother whose parents
emigrated to England from Poland around 1870.
Pessa was not only her Yiddish name; it also appears as her English name on
her British birth certificate. But I discovered this only recently, when
I searched for her birth record. At the time, I knew only that her name
had been "Priscilla" -- which was later given to me and to one of my
cousins as a middle name because she died shortly before we were born. But
when I searched for a "Priscilla" Cohen born in England in 1878 I drew a
blank; there were half a dozen Priscilla Cohens born in the surrounding
years, but none in 1878. Eventually, I got her marriage authorization
certificate from the Beth Din, and that is how I learned that her official
name in both Yiddish and English was actually Pessa. And there was indeed
a Pessa Cohen in the birth register for 1878, who turned out to be the
right person.
My guess is that she acquired the name Priscilla when she started school;
possibly she (or her mother) gave her name as "Pessy," which her English
schoolteacher could easily have misconstrued as "Prissy."

Remembering that there is no clear-cut answer when dealing with names,
and any name in one language could be any name (almost) in any other
language - still: The name Pessa (various spellings in Yiddish) can be
also a variation of the Yiddish name Perl, which means "pearl" and is
often "translated" to Hebrew as Pnina or Margalit.
Best wishes for a good year and Hag Sukot Sameah,

"While checking the EIDB I came across the given name Pesse,
20 years of age.
Does anyone know the origin of meaning of that name?"
The information below is based on the Given Names Data Bases for Europe
which we are developing.
The Yiddish name Pesa was widely used in Eastern Europe. It is linked to
the Hebrew name pair Bisya/Basya (Chronicles I 4:18). Bisya was the name
of Pharaoh's daughter who drew Moshe Rabenu from the Nile River where he
had been placed in a reed basket. Bisya later converted to Judaism and
took on the Hebrew name Basya "daughter of G-d", thus forever linking the
two Hebrew names Bisya and Basya for Jews. She married Mered (of the tribe
of Yehuda) and later left Egypt along with all of the other Jews during
their exodus under Moshe's leadership.
The following Yiddish names are linked together with these two names:
Basya, Bisya, Pasha, Pashe, Pesa, Pese, Pesha, Peshe
and also the following Yiddish "nicknames":
Besl, Beska, Besya, Paslin, Pasya, Pesl, Peshka, Peshke, Peshkha, Pesi,
Pesil, Peska, Peske, Pesya, Pesye
English names commonly adopted by Eastern European women who immigrated to
the US were:
Bashe, Bessie, Bertha, Betty, Fannie, Paula, Pauline, Pearl, Pessa, Pessie
and some of these names were also adopted by immigrants to England, along
with the name Priscilla (not used in the US).
The names Basya, Bisya, Pesha, and Peshka were commonly used in Eastern
Europe by rabbis who were preparing a get (divorce document) as the Legal
name of the woman, although for women who had one of the other linked
names, their name could also be used if needed.
Since many of the above Yiddish names also share a linkage to the Hebrew
name Bas Sheva, it is sometimes suggested that the name Bas Sheva is the
primary name for this family. This phenomenon of multiple sharing of
Yiddish names with various Hebrew primary names is not uncommon.
