Dear Mr. Winthrop:
.......... based on the sparse information you did provide,
here's what I can tell you:
1) The Jewish birth records of Zloczow and Lwow alike are, due to historic
circumstances, not in the Ukraine, but rather here in Warsaw. This
includes the Jewish birth records of both towns and the marriage records
for Zloczow. If you would like to retrieve your parents' documentation, I
recommend that you write to the office that holds those records (English is
OK, Polish is better) and explain your relationship to the individuals in
question. The address is:
Archiwum Zabuzanskie
USC Warszawa-Srodmiescie
ul. Jezuicka 1/3 [skr. poczt. P-18]
00-950 Warsaw, Poland.
They are generally pretty good about responding.
2) If they married in Tarnow, you could try:
Urzad Stanu Cywilnego
Tarnow, Poland
and ask for "akt slubu" with the names and date.
Those documents should give you a lead as to where to seek earlier
generations' documents;
3) We have a copy here of the memorial book for the Zloczow Jewish
community. It lists as Holocaust victims Syma, Dawid and Chaja Weintraub.
Elsewhere in the ext (p. 197), there is a reference to the deportations of
29 August 1942 when 2000 Zloczow Jews were taken to the Belzec
extermination camp. It mentions that Kranca Weintraub as offered an
opportunity to leave the transport on the condition that she leave her
infant son behind. She refused the offer and remained on the transport.
The memorial volume is unindexed, but it contains a tremendous amount of
information about the community. IF you knew anything about your family's
schooling, religious, political or Zionist affiliations, etc. I might be
able to find more detail in articles referring to specific institutions in
Zloczow;
4) The survivor registrations conducted by the Central Committee of the
Jew sin Poland [CKZP] in 1945-1947 show a handful of Wajntraubs from Lwow:
W-2612: Adam, son of Jakub & Klara
W-2639: Bernard, son of Nachman & Cyla
W-2717: Irene Kac Weintraub
W-2882: Szulim, son of Fiszel & Mincia [he's from Zloczow!!]
The Warsaw committee further registered:
28813: Jozef Weintraub, son of Filip & Roza (nee Bardach), Irene Kac's husband.
