Hi All

I don't know if anyone here can assist me but here I go anyhow..

My 4x great-grandfather Louis Bernard CHIOCCHI was born c179 somewhere in
Italy.
He was a figurine maker or, as he termed it on the various British censuses:
an artist in plaster.
He apparently married an Elizabeth Someone-or-Other who was born in Dublin,
Ireland, and their first child, Catherine, was also born in Dublin c1825
while their 3 sons were all born in Liverpool, England.

So far, I can find no documentation as to where he was from, and that
includes naturalisation records.

Some people have implied that, if he was a craftsman / figure maker, he
would have been from the Tuscany region....

Any thoughts or ideas VERY welcome

Not a lot of help, but there are 145 Chiocchi listings in the Italy phone
directory at http://www.paginebianche.it/index.html

Sounds like you need a more definitive idea of where he came from in Italy.

This is the distribution in Italy of the surname Chiocchi.
It is not correct to say that he would have been from Tuscany because
he was a figure maker, a plaster. Also in the city where I'm living
(Faenza in the province of Ravenna- Region Emilia Romagna) there were
many artists in plaster, and many old houses have the ceilings painted
very well.
In this region (Emilia Romagna) there are 4 Chiocchi

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi?btt=1&tl=2&tr=101&tc=&cb=&tq=2&qs=Chiocchi&qsn=&dv=Emilia+Romagna&ind=&nc=

Here there are the addresses of the Archivio di Stato in this region:

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi?btt=1&tl=2&tr=104&tc=&cb=&tq=2&qs=Archivio+di+Stato&dv=emilia+romagna&ind=&nc=

You can write them and ask if in their Archives there is a birth
certificate or a military service certificate of your anchestor.

The same thing you can do for Tuscany:

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi?btt=1&tl=2&tr=104&tc=&cb=&tq=2&qs=Archivio+di+Stato&dv=Toscana&ind=&nc=

In Umbria:

Lazio:

He is an italian artist.

I have read an old post you have write in 2006 where you wrote that
the surname of the mother of your anchestor was Bregotti. I think that
the correct surname coud be Brigotti (in Inglish the italian "e" you
read "i") so I have look for Brigotti:

here the distribution of Brigotti surname:

http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html

As you can see there are no much family with this surname, but there
are two in Emilia Romagna: It is possible that the origin of your
family coud be here.

I have made suppositions, but if you can write to the State Archives,
it is probabily that something can happen. Ciao from Italy, Maria Luisa
