Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or advice on where I can get
information on my family name prior to 1900? I know that my grandfather,
with the same name as myself, originally from Calabria, came to America at
the turn of the last century through Ellis Island. I'm interested in the
"tree" that came before him.

Ciao Antony,

Is this the Antony Rodino you are talking about ?

Tony RODINO
Birth Date: 26 Nov 1887
Death Date: Jun 1964
Social Security Number: 507-05-4544
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Nebraska
Actual Death Residence: Nebraska

I've found two Antonio Rodino's on Ellis Island, but I guess your
grand-father is the youngerst one (the oldest being 50!), so maybe
it's him:

Antonio Rodino
Italian,
From Gerace, Italy
Arrived on April 24, 1904,
22 years old
Male
Single
Arrived on the Ship Italia
Departed from the port of Naples, Italy.
He was headed to Springfield to someone named Vincenzo, I guess.

The same Tony Rodino also figures in the 1930 census, but I can't view
it. Maybe someone who does can help you :)

The surname Rodino is very rare in Calabria. You can find the Rodino's
still living there on the Italian phonebook. Here:
<http://elenco.libero.it/elencotel/public/RisultatoComuni.jsp?nome=&cognome=rodino&provincia=RC&prov=REGGIO%20CALABRIA>
and here:
<http://elenco.libero.it/elencotel/public/RisultatoComuni.jsp?nome=&cognome=rodino&provincia=CZ&prov=CATANZARO>
It's just 7 people.

Also, if Antonio was from Gerace, you can probably find him in that
commune's Stato Civile and / or at the local state archive.

Found this email for the state archive:
piam...@tiscalinet.it

Good Luck,

Fabio

Fabio,
Thanks for the help. Yes, that is him, he became Tony Rodino once he settled
in America. Now, even more difficult, is getting information about his wife,
my grandmother. Her name was Jovannina(spelling?) Calderone, and she was
originally from Bari, Italy. She settled in Louisiana and moved to Nebraska
with Tony. She died a year or so before (I think it was before) my
grandfather and is buried beside him, also in Nebraska. Can you help me with
this one?

Her probable name was Giovanna or Giovannina (a nickname for Giovanna,
something like Jenny).

I tried to see the phonebook book in Italy and in Bari there are both
Calderone and Caldarone, which is a variant of the surname. I can't
help you much further as I wasn't able to find any Giovanna Calderone.

Only reference to her was the 1930 census for Nebraska, where I found:

Tony Rodino 39 1890
Jennie Rodino 35 1894
Michael Rodino 15 1914
Mile Rodino 12 1917
Jackmie Rodino 10 1919
Josee Rodino 5 1924
Joseph Rodino 0 1929
Catherine Rodino 9 1920

This census can be viewed further inspected online on
http://www.ancestry.com - One must subscribe to their services though,
and I still haven't, so maybe someone who has may help you :)

Try asking here on the forum.

Ciao,

Fabio

Antonio Rodino, did you ever find out any more info on Jennie Calderone Rodino or her parents? She was my great-grandma.
