Since I was a kid (I'm about to be 50) and we had a recording, I always
loved this song that, I think, begins "C'e la luna, menza mare..." The song
was in the Godfather, Connie's wedding, I think--an older man gets up and
sings it. It's supposedly bawdy. I was just listening to a version by
Louis Prima and I want to find the lyrics. Any help?

Greg,

There are probably as many verses as there are people who sing it.

LA LUNA MEZZ'O MARE
-------------------

I. THE GARDEN MAN III. THE FISHERMAN

E la luna mezzo 'o mare: E la luna mezzo 'o mare:
Mamma mia me maretari -- Mamma mia me maretari --
Figghia mia a cu te ddari? Figghia mia a cu te ddari?
Mamma mia penzaci tu. Mamma mia penzaci tu.

Si ti rugnu a la chiancheri, Si ti rugnu 'o pisciaolu,
Iddu va, iddu veni, Iddu va, iddu veni,
Sempe 'a sazizza ne mani teni... Sempe 'u pisci ne mani
teni...
Si ci pigghia 'a fantasia Si ci pigghia 'a fantasia
Ti sazizzia figghiuzza mia. Ti pisculia figghiuzza mia.

(Prosa) (Prosa)
Provera figghia Provera figghia
A corpu di suzizza A corpu di pisci
A vonnu assecutari, vonnu assecutari,
Ma quannu mai, ti una beneri cu mia. Figghia me cori.

II. THE BUTCHER IV. THE SHOEMAKER

E la luna mezzo 'o mare: E la luna mezzo 'o mare:
Mamma mia me maretari -- Mamma mia me maretari --
Figghia mia a cu te ddari? Figghia mia a cu te ddari?
Mamma mia penzaci tu. Mamma mia penzaci tu.

Si ti rugnu a lu furnaro Si ti rugnu 'o 'nzalataru
Iddu va, iddu veni, Iddu va, iddu veni,
'U pistuluni ne mani teni... Sempe 'o citrolu ne mani

Si ci pigghia 'a fantasia Si ci pigghia 'a fantasi
Ti pistulia figghiuzza mia. Ti citrulia figghiuzza mia.

(Prosa) REFRAIN:
Provera figghia Oh Mama, pisce fritte

A corpu di pistulona Oh Mama, pisce fritte

Ti vonno assicutari,
Ma quannu mai, ea mia ti una baneri

***

LA LUNA MEZZO 'O MARE (ENGLISH)

AND THE MOON IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA:
OH MY MOTHER I MUST GET MARRIED --
OH MY DAUGHTER WHO WILL WE GET?
MY MOTHER I LEAVE IT UP TO YOU.

(I)
IF I GET YOU THE GARDEN MAN
HE WILL COME AND HE WILL GO,
BUT HE'LL ALWAYS HOLD THE CUCUMBER IN HIS HANDS...
IF HE GETS A BRIGHT IDEA
HE'LL CUCUMBER YOU OH MY DAUGHTER.

(II)
IF I GET YOU THE BUTCHER
HE WILL COME AND HE WILL GO,
BUT HE'LL ALWAYS HOLD THE SAUSAGE IN HIS HANDS...
IF HE GETS A BRIGHT IDEA
HE'LL SAUSAGE YOU OH MY DAUGHTER.

(III)
IF I GET YOU THE FISHERMAN
HE WILL COME AND HE WILL GO,
BUT HE'LL ALWAYS HOLD THE FISH IN HIS HANDS...
IF HE GETS A BRIGHT IDEA
HE'LL FISH YOU OH MY DAUGHTER.

(IV)
IF I GET YOU THE SHOEMAKER
HE WILL COME AND HE WILL GO,
BUT HE'LL ALWAYS HOLD THE SHOE IN HIS HANDS...
IF HE GETS A BRIGHT IDEA
HE'LL SHOE YOU OH MY DAUGHTER.

Greg,

I am search for songs to put on my WebPages and I know I saw a few site that offered sheet music. Someone else on the list is looking for lyrics too. If I come across them again I will post the URL's to the list.

This is my first response to newsgroups so please bear with me.

My parents used to sing that song when I was young and I knew some of the
words but wasn't sure what they meant. After "menza mare" came "mama mia sa
maritara" (excuse the spelling) which meant my mother was getting married, I
believe. Then came " figlia mia (or figlio mio) qui pensera" which meant
my daughter
or son what do you think? I can't recall all the words. then came the
chorus. "O Mama pisca frita e baccala etc."
If you do get the words I'd like to have them also, so would appreciate if
you would post them or send to me.
Thanks.

Wasn't hard was it? Writing to a newsgroup? I am amazed at the number of
quick responses I received.

I think you're right--it is figlia mia.

Some of the other words seem different in the response with the lyrics
(David Zerga).

I think we all heard this as kids and made our own words to it, some correct
and some not so correct.

Thank you David Zerga for the words to the song that I too have been
looking for since I was a kid also. The first version I heard was by
Lou Monte and he called it "Lazy Mary". While I was visiting in Italy
a few months ago, I called upon my cousins to find a recording.
Although all the older people knew the song and or the melody they
could not find a recording artist in Italy who recorded the song. In
a music shop in Varese a woman attempted to help and called other
people humming the melody of the song and could not come up with a
recording artist. I do have Lou Monte's version and also a record/CD
"Festival Italiano 22 Italian Party Favorites" by Compose, a division
of Peter Pan Industries, Inc., 88 Saint Francis Street, Newark, New
Jersey, 07105, #9947-2.
I am also in my 50's and I remember the song at all the weddings and
other Italian festivals. When I was 9 or 10 years old, I asked my
mother to translate the words. She told me it was a song about a
fisherman that went out fishing every night, but instead of fish he
was fishing for women. She never did tell me the whole story. I have
a music sheet that I purchase in "Little Italy" in New York City and
it is in the Sicilian dialect. So as a non Italian speaking person,
the Sicilian dialect did not do me any good. That's my story on the
great song. Thanks again David.

My version was dialect and not 'standard' Italian.
