Good day everyone and a Happy new Year.

I have recently become a member of the Murphy Family by marriage. As a
genealogist (Dutch Family), I felt it was important to research my wife's
family.

I now come to you for assistance as I am unable to go further back than
about 1867.

The information I have is as follows:

My wife is Colleen Murphy.

Collen is the daughter of Frank Murphy - 1948 July 27th Withbourne,
Newfoundland, and Labrador and Judy (Judith Smith) New Brunswick

The father of Frank Murphy is Patrick (Pat) Murphy - 1909, Ram Island and
the mother of Frank is a Madonna Barron - 1907, Sibleys Cove

The Grandfather of Frank Murphy is John Murphy, 1867 and His Grandmother is
Lucy Murphy (BRUCE).

Paternal. The Maternal side Grandfather is Peter Barron, 1865, Sibleys Cove
and Maternal Grandmother is Maggie Barron, 1868 - Iona

The information was taken from the following site:
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/NGB/index.html

another interesting.http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/NGB/index.html

If you look under Nfld. census info, it's under the year 1921 for the area
of Placentia, St. Mary's and Burin, (I believe it's number 8035)
you'll find listings for Sibley's Cove, Long Hr., and the Rams. Your
family is listed in Sibley's Cove. It's Peter and Maggie Murphy. Frank's
mother,
Madonna is listed as a child.

Iona (Rams)

(pop. 1951, 36). An abandoned community situated on one of the Iona
Islands near the entrance to Long Harbour on the eastern side of Placentia
Bay. Until 1910 the Iona Islands and the settlement there were known as Rams
Island -- a name dating back to at least 1765, when Captain James Cook qv
used it to refer to the islands in his survey of Placentia Bay. The name was
officially changed to Iona Islands and the settlement to Iona in 1910 after
a petition spearheaded by Rev. Fr. St. John was approved by the Newfoundland
Government's Nomenclature Board. The new choice of name was either ``in view
of the striking resemblance of the group to the more celebrated one on the
west coast of Scotland ... or in compliment to the family of Bruces [who
were purported to be descendents of Robert the Bruce, a former king of
Scotland] who inhabit these islands ...'' (quoted in Seary).

Upper (Harbour) Island, Iona
The date of the first settlement at Iona is not known, but it is quite
conceivable that there were summer if not winter residents throughout most
of the eighteenth century. The 1836 Census indicates a well-established,
flourishing community of 197 people, including 43 servants, making Iona at
this time the largest community on any of the islands in Placentia Bay.
There were 25 dwelling houses and 4.5 acres of land in cultivation, on which
the residents kept cattle and sheep and grew potatoes and hay. The economic
mainstay of the community was the inshore cod fishery, which was prosecuted
in 29 boats of varying sizes. The residents were Roman Catholics, but there
was no church or school.

The 1845 Census lists two communities for the islands, Upper Rams Island
(59) and Lower Rams Island (108), and indicates that Upper Island residents
were more involved in agriculture than those on Lower Island. There was a
Roman Catholic church on the Lower Island, but no priest was stationed
there, the Bar Haven priest visiting several times a year. The school
appears to have been closed in the 1850s, but was reopened by 1869. The JHA
for 1873 reported that Miss Annie O'Brien, the teacher, received a salary of
£25 per year.

The 1857 Census, with only one listing for Rams Islands, shows that the
population had dropped to 133. Hutchinson lists the principal inhabitants
for the 1864-65 season as David Bruce, planter; Michael Fitzpatrick and John
Murphy, traders; Michael Murphy, Patrick Murphy and Martin Young, fishermen.
The population remained steady throughout the rest of the nineteenth
century. Lovell's Newfoundland Directory lists the following heads of
households: David Daniel, (Jr.), James and Robert Bruce, John Duke, Michael
Fitzpatrick (Jr.), James Griffin and son, William McFarlane, Dennis and
Michael Murphy, John Newman, John Pope and Edward Sweeney; planters David
Bruce (Sr.), David, John and Michael Fitzpatrick, and John and Patrick
Murphy.

By 1900 most of the population was involved in the inshore fishery. There
were also eight lobster factories producing 125 cases of lobster, but by
1910 these factories had closed. Between 1900 and 1918 the residents went
further offshore, using larger Cape St. Mary's boats, but after World War I
returned to the smaller, traditional boats.

After World War I the population of Iona decreased sharply. By 1945 it had
dropped to 46. Iona was supposed to receive mail and passenger boat service
every two weeks, but often, in stormy weather, it was bypassed and left
without service for months at a time. The school was often closed when no
teachers could be found. The community was last reported in the 1951 Census
with 36 residents, but they too had resettled by 1956.

Hi, I have been researching the Barrons of Newfoundland, and I know that
you can get information from the following group NFLD-...@rootsweb.com
<NFLD-...@rootsweb.com> I know there is a person that is tied to this
branch of the Barron & Murphy tree. I am related to them but we are still
trying to tie together the branches. My branch was in Placentia ,
Newfoundland, Dunville to be more exact.
Keep in touch , I will get info for you.
