Hi,
I'm trying to my gg grandfather Thomas Mcdermott, who I believe was born in Westport, County Mayo around 1855, and whose father was named John.
He moved to England at some point in his early life, as he joined the army in Woolwich in 1879 and it's on his service record that he gives his place of birth as Westport.
He lists his next of kin as his father, John, who was living in Manchester, Lancashire in 1879, so I assume his family left Ireland sometime after Thomas' birth in 1855 and settled in Manchester, before Thomas moved to Kent to join the army in 1879.
Thomas' fathers occupation is given as sailor on his marriage certificate.
Thomas was Catholic, but I've tried searching the Catholic parish records and haven't been able to trace his birth. Has anyone got any ideas of where i can look next??
Thank you,
Laura
