This is the needle in the haystack, but I am bound to keep looking for
it. My ggrandfather John M. O'Brien was born in New Orleans in 1864. He
was placed in the St. Mary's Boys Asylum at age 3. His parents
reportedly died of one of the epidemics that hit New Orleans during that
period. He was later "given to" a French family in St. Martin Parish,
and later married one of the Decuir girls, Aliska. I have gone through
ship's lists and immigration forms, and just about every birth
certificate I can get my hands on from that area, and that period, but
no definitive answers. There were not too many O'brien's in New Orleans
at that time and I am hoping someone may have word of a lost brother or
sister. Because he was adopted (although there was no name change} there
are privacy issues that remain today. John talked of family members
(aunts and an uncle perhaps) who came to visit him at the orphanage. I
don't know who dropped from sight first, but he did move a good distance
in 1875 when he was taken in by the Decuir's. Anyway, if you have info
I'd like to hear about it. Thanks.
