My wife Noreen Dorothy Cullen is trying to find her roots in Ireland. She has done a lot of work and identified her family in the US. We run into a dead-end with her great-grandfather.

Patrick Joseph Cullen
1827–1893
BIRTH 1827 • Townland, Maynaugh, Ireland
DEATH 24 JUL 1893 • Menlo Park, San Mateo Co, California, USA

The furthest back we can find is the 1860 U.S. Census where he was in Allegheny County Pennsylvania with an Edward Cullen. The information above is from his tombstone. The date of his birth could be off by as much as seven years. It is probably 1827 – 1834. The largest problem is that we cannot find the location of his birth. Does anyone know where Townland, Maynaugh is and where the town records can be accessed? There are many Patrick Joseph Cullens and because his birth date is uncertain, we are at a dead-end. We would appreciate any help. My email is Kukk...@Cox.net.

If you look at his grave it specifically states that the townland is in County Cavan. You can look at all the townlands here:
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/
Phonetically, the closest to that would be Moynagh upper or lower.
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/clanmahon/drumlumman/kilgolagh/moynagh-upper/
Both are in the Parish of Drumlumman.

Unfortunately, the earliest baptismal records are from 1837. Perhaps he had younger siblings who were born around that time and you could find those records. If you are lucky he might have followed Irish naming patterns for his children.
https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-names.html
Even if he didn't follow those patterns, you might have hints in the first and middle names of his children.

There is a James Cullen listed in the tithe applotment for Moynagh Upper in 1824.

I would suggest making a free account at findmypast so that you can search their Catholic records for free. There is a Charles Cullen baptized in 1839 whose parents are Michael Cullen and Anna Lynch. It lists their residence as Moynagh.
