Dear Donald,
This is what I have on the family of St. Ignatius de Loyola:
I. Martín López de Murúa y Lazcano, with whom the documented genealogy
begins. He is said to have been a son of Enrique Urgel de Lazcano, a
noble of certain importance, by Margarita, Bastarda de Navarra, whom he
married in 1243. This is not sure. We know that Margarita, Bastarda
de Navarra (an illegitimate daughter of King Teobaldo I de Navarra by
Marquesa Gil de Rada), was married to Alvar Pérez de Azagra, Suzerain
Lord of Albarracín, but she is a generation further). If such marriage
existed, she might have been an illegitimate daughter of Comte Thibault
III de Champagne, although some authors (like the Garcia Carrafa
brothers) said she was a legitimate daughter, by Da. Blanca,
Presumptive Heiress of Navarra (fact that seems very unlikely).
He m. Da. Elvira Alteiz de Oñaz y Loyola.
II. Don García López de Lazcano, a nobleman who served under King D.
Alfonso XI de Castilla in 1335.
He m. Da. Teresa Fernández de Ayala, of whom it is said that was a
daughter of D. Fernán Pérez de Ayala (who had in fact a daughter called
Da. Teresa, but was married to D. Gómez Manrique). If this is true,
this Da. Teresa was possibly an illegitimate daughter of the same
powerful magnate.
III. Don Lope García de Lazcano, Lord of the House of Lazcano.
He m. (according to Guerra, Juan Carlos de: “Ensayo de un Padrón
Histórico de Guipúzcoa, según el orden de sus familias pobladoras”,
Bilbao, 1928) Da. Marina de Murguía (whose parentage within this great
feudal family has not been found yet, though she belonged certainly to
the branch of Astigarraga of that House).
Their third son:
IV. Don Juan Ruíz de Lazcano.
He m. Da. Navarra de Murguía, his relative, from the branch of
Astigarraga, in Guipúzcoa.
V. Don Lope García de Lazcano y Murguía.
He m., 1413, Da. Sancha Yáñez de Oñaz y Loyola, Lady of both these
Houses of Oñaz and Loyola as Heiress of his only brother, D. Juan Pérez
de Loyola. Daughter of D. Beltrán Yáñez de Oñaz y Loyola, Lord of both
these Houses (who made will dated 1405), by Da. Ochanda Martínez de
Lete (a daughter of D. Martín Yáñez de Lete, Lord of this House), and
whose lineage can be traced up to the beginning of the XIII century.
VI. Don Juan Pérez de Loyola, Lord of the Houses of Oñaz and Loyola.
He m., 1438, Da. Sancha Pérez de Iraeta, from a noble family of
Guipúzcoa.
VII. Don Beltrán Yáñez de Oñaz y Loyola, Lord of the Houses of Oñaz and
Loyola.
He m., 1467, Da. Marina Sanz de Licona y Balda, daughter of D. Martín
García de Licona, Member of the Royal Council of H.M., the King of
Castilla, by Da. Marquesa de Balda, Lady of the House and Manor of
Balda, in Azcoitía.
Their children (inter alia):
1) D. Juan Pérez de Loyola, died w/o issue during the wars in
Naples.
2) D. Martín García de Oñaz y Loyola, Lord of both Houses, who m.
by proxit dtd. Sep. 11, 1498, Da. Magdalena de Aráoz y Zabala, Lady in
waiting of H.M. the Queen Isabel La Católica. With issue (the
Marquises of Santiago de Oropesa).
3) D. Beltrán de Loyola, who died w/o issue during the wars in
Naples.
4) D. Hernando de Loyola, who was a conqueror in Indias (América),
dying in Tierra Firme (Panamá).
5) D. Pedro López de Loyola, Dean and Rector of the Church of San
Sebastián de Soreasu, in Azpeitía.
6) SAN IGNACIO DE LOYOLA.. Born as D. Iñigo de Loyola, he changed
his name when becoming a monk. He was the founder of the Company of
Jesus (or simply Jesuits).
Unfortunately I don’t have yet data on his maternal ancestry, but I’ll
try to see what I can find.
Hope this serves.
