Hallo,

ich hab unten mal meine e-mail an jemand anderes reinkopiert.

Kathe is a kind of farm. In northern Germany there were two kinds of
farmers, Hufner and Käthner. The first had a Hufe, which in first place
means a certain size of area (but varying in its extension in the various
regions). The Hufners were obliged to serve the lord of the region ("Hand-
und Spanndienste"). They had to provide a certain amount of days work to be
done (Handdienste) and to place a waggon to the lord's disposal
(Spanndienste).

This is no kind of serfdom, but feudalism. The king gave land to a duke, the
duke to a count, the count to the farmers. The farmers pledge fidelity and
labor-help to the count, the count pledges to shield them and to let them
have the land, the count pledges fidelity and military help to the duke, the
duke pledges to shield the count and to let him have the land, the duke...
and so on. At times that was branded as "Führer und Gefolgschaft" today it
would be called "Teamwork" :-)

The Käthners only had to provide Handdienste, they had just a house (that is
the Kathe) and some land, in some cases no land. It is thought, that the
Hufners were the original farmers, clearing the land and dividing it up
between themselves. The Käthners were descendants, the older Hufners after
giving their Hufe to the son (Altenteilerkate), or craftsmen of the village
(Schusterkathe, Hirtenkathe, Schulkathe). A special thing is the
Brinkkäthner. That is the owner of a Brinkkathe, which were mostly newly
created Kathen at the borders of the village (brink in low German is the
same as in English) with very little land. The classification as Hufner or
Käthner or Instmann or Tagelöhner was very important for the services
(Frondienste) and the amount of taxes to be paid. In these classes there
were, related to the size of the farm, distinctions between Vollhufner (had
a full Hufe), 3/4-Hufner, 1/2-Hufner and 1/4 Hufner, also between
Kleinkäther and Großkäthner.

My homevillage Willinghusen, Kreis Stormarn for example had in 1573 2 Hufen
(Vollhufen, the first being the Bauernvogtei), 4 1/2-Hufen, 2 Großkathen and
2 Kleinkathen.

Then there were created some Brinkkathen, and some land was won by drying
swamps and such measures. So in 1800 there were 2 Vollhufen, 4 3/4-Hufen, 2
1/2-Hufen, 4 Großkathen and two Anbauerstellen (formerly called
Brinkkathen).

A small Hufe would not necessarily be bigger than a Große Kathe in the same
village. The Hufners were in some areas called Hüfner, Hübner, Höfner,
Höffner, Huber. The Käthners Kötter, Köthner, Köter (The famous "Aus jedem
Dorf ein Köter" did not concern dogs, but the instruction of the lord that
he wanted on a certain day one Käthner from each of his villages).
