Hannover areas for Aufenkamp and Aufdenkamp
EAufenkamp
I am trying to locate anyone of the Aufenkamp or Aufdenkamp families in
the Hannover area. Am searching for information on John Henry, William,
and
Jennie Aufenkamp who moved to USA in 1848 and 1848. Friedrich and Sophia
did not leave Germany. Records were destroyed in Breman. Any info on how
to contact someone in these families would be appreciated.

I know of some Aufdenkamp families who lived in Northern Westphalia near
Preussische Oldendorf and Roedinghausen who immigrated to Champaign
County, Illinois in the 1860's. Could there be any possible
connection??

There are no Aufenkamp names in the current German phonebooks, and
only one Aufdenkamp, and that one is not in Hannover.
Usually "the Hannover area" means in the kingdom of Hannover, rather
than near the city of Hannover. Clearly the kingdom is much larger
than the city, so it sounds like you need to get more precise info before
you can proceed.

Here are a few "Auf Dem Kamp" names from the German phone book, there =
are many more in the Dortmund and Bielefeld area. They are listed under =
spelling of "Aufdemkamp, Aufdemkampe, Auf Dem Kamp, and Auf Dem Kampe". =
Maybe if you can find an Obituary for one of your ancestors, it may give =
the actual town they came from, another good place to look is the early =
church books in the church they may have went to. These may or may not =
have been microfilmed and available at your local FHC, if not, most =
churches in America are very happy to look it up for you and normally =

What we have here is a typical South Oldenburg/North Osnabrück
farmer's name. Auf dem Kampe means nothing other then 'in or on the
field' and this is where some people had their hut and that became the
name. It is very similar to other names such as In/auf der Heide
which became Indehees in Platt and other names like Updegrove and
Updike and so on.
