> Searching for ships arriving NY 1 Oct 1847 with passengers from
> Germany
The only vessel that arrived at New York from the European continent on 1
October 1847 was the Swedish ship ECHO, Nelson [Nilssen/Nilsson], master,
46 days from Antwerp, with merchandise to Boorman, Johnston & Co. 164
steerage passengers; there were 4 deaths among the passengers during the
voyage.
Unfortunately, no original or duplicate passenger list for this voyage of
the ECHO appears to survive. However, U.S. Customs officials were
required to make abstracts of the passenger lists they had received, and
to forward these abstracts once each quarter to the Secretary of State.
It is possible that the list of passengers on this voyage of the ECHO
survives among the quarterly abstracts. The surviving quarterly abstracts
for the port of New York are held by the National Archives in Washington,
DC. The quarterly abstracts have *not* been microfilmed, so it shall be
necessary for you to contact the National Archives directly to inquire
whether the quarterly abstracts for the port of New York for the 4th
quarter of 1847 survive, and if they do, how you can access them.
