My great grandfather, August Wangler, came from Germany.
Unfortunately, everything that we have, naturalization papers, etc.
just list Germany, no towns mentioned. He lived in New York, Albany
area. My great grandmother, Bertha Maurer, also came from Germany.
Again, no other information. We are trying desperately to find out
how to go about finding some information on where to begin to look.
My father wanted to know his family roots desperately and died before
he could find anything, so we girls are trying to carry on the legacy
and see if we can come up with anything. We desperately need help!
Thanks! Carol

Was your great grandfather a church member and was he buried from the
church? My great grandfather's place of birth was listed in the church
burial records.

Do you know when your GGF came to the USA? Have you searched for his
arrival at any of the immigration locations? Census data should show when
he came to the USA for a start if you don't know that information. It may
not be correct, but should give you a range to search.

Same questions about GGM.

Here is one bit of data from the Castle Garden site at
http://www.castlegarden.org/

It does show an Aug. Wangler, coming from Switzerland. Probably not your
guy. Would the age be right?

Aug Wangler Occupation Cabinet Maker
Age 20
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 13 Jul 1888
Origin Switzerland
Port Antwerp
Last Residence U

In 2001 there were
594 Wangler and
11889 Maurer
in the German phone directory!

So you must follow the proposals of Joe Pessara and try to find
other ways to find your ancestor.

Agreed fully in search direction, asking for arrival dates etc. Even for
the different ports in Europe some registers were maintained, so they
might give a further lead in searching. So please state the name, date
of arrival in the US or Canada etc. (as far as known). When the ships
name is known (arrived e.g. Ellis Island) from these possible sources
then a search can be done for possible departure harbours with their own
records. That might lead to a more specific origin and gives more lead
to search in Germany (or (seen the post of Henning Boettcher)) even
other countries within Europe.

Regards,
Richard
