In the past I could send and email to a server to get geographic information
for german place names but this server at g...@genealogy.net no longer sends
replies.
Is this service still available at another address ?

It seems that the service is temporarily unavailable. The German
instruction page for GeoServ here: http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/GeoServ
shows the warning:
Die Abfrage ist derzeit wegen technischer Probleme nicht aktiv!!
which translates to:
The service is temporarily unavailable due to technical problems.
