In "bavarian" dialect you often say: "Schorsch"

In standard non-dialect German it is spelled GEORG
when used as a first-name.
I never noticed whether this occurs as a surname, but there
are several online German telephone directories you could check
to see if it exists as such.

Dear ML,

the pronounciation of GEORGE as a surname is GE-OR-GE. Germans
spelling is silb by silb ! If the surname is GEORG then GE-ORG.

Current spelling is GEORG ... but GEORGE is a valid spelling of ittoo,
when you go back some 160 years or so. At those times, George was just as
good a valid German spelling like Georg is today. When in doubt, take it
down as Georg(e).

No, George is in German George too. In the birth certificate is the
correct spelling registered. This should be the only spelling of the
surname in English and in German.

Gerrit

"Schorsch" is only a bavarian nick name for the first name GEORGE,
not for the family name GEORGE.

Isn't Georg the German spelling for George? It is for my great-grandfather who
came from Germany.

I have seen the surname GEORGI and also a given name spelled Jörg (Joerg).
These were from Bavarian Pfalz.

GEORGE would sound as

GE as get without the t
OR like or in origin
GE as above.

The accent is on the second syllabe -or.

We had a famous actor with this name: Stefan George in this country.

The e at the and is important for otherwise in everyday pronounciation in
Northern germany the secong G would be a ch as in Rachel (if any English
speaking men could manage that sound)

Hi Jo,

I think, before your great-grandfather left Germany his name was Georg. In the
the new world he changed his name to George. (the english version of the name
Georg).
150 years ago many people could not read and write . This is the reason for
changing so many German names in an english version by arriving America.

Nach Hans Bahlow's "Namenlexikon" gibt es noch die suedd.-alem. Form von
Joerg, Girg (oesterr.) und Juergen (norddeuitsch).
Ansonsten lateinisch = Georgi (Georgius)
(Griechisch "Landmann,Bauer")
