I recently found out one of my ancestors was born in Hessen, Germany. Can
anybody tell me what part of modern day Germany it is located in? Also, what
large cities are located in modern Hessen? Has the present day borders of this
area changed much since the 1840s? Thanks.

Hessen is a federal state in today愀 Germany. Capital is Wiesbaden, largest
city is Frankfurt a.M, other major cities are Kassel, Darmstadt, Offenbach,
Giessen.

Borders kept moving an awful lot of times since the 1840s :-(

I couldn't find the original message, so am answering you. SORRY. If
you go to http://www.expediamaps.com/PlaceFinder.asp there are many
Hessens listed. What I like about the site is that they give
possibilities even if I don't have the correct spelling of the place I
am looking for.
Good Hunting.

Hey, just check

http://www.hessen.de

(it's available in english there too)

It's that easy, becase "hesse" is *only* the english term for the
german "hessen". Go and try it. You'll find something on hessen's
history as well.
