Perhaps I can help you in a few months... In any case, I'd appreciate any
tips you've found uniquely useful in Ostfriesland, especially with the
handling of the non-patronymic naming prior to Napoleon.

My ancestors were from Hage, Norden, Marienhafe, Upgant, including:
Name Birth date Birth location Spouse
Ahrenholz, Jan Aries Thadena, Ahltje Jauen
Ahrenholz, Neelke Janssen Jan 24, 1817 Halbemond, Ksp.Hage Blum, Arien Harms
Ahrenholz, Tatje Janssen Dec 31, 1826 Halbemond, Ksp.Hage Flesner, Arien Gerdes
Frerichs, Gretje Dec 1829 Flesner, Arien Gerdes
Frerichs, Trientje Apr 06, 1718 Harmens, Jann
Both of my mother's parents came to Illinois (Danforth and Ashkum, about
an hour south of Chicago) from Ostfriesland as teenagers in the late
1800's, although other members of one family (Wilken) had come as early
as 1854. The names and homes of my mother's four grandparents (that I
know of) were:
her grandfather: Eibe Wilken, born Sept. 23, 1838, in Ostochtersum
families: WILKEN, EIBEN, FRIEDEN (once listed as Friedrichs), and
JACOBS in Westerholt and Ostochtersum.
(Several of her grandfather's cousins (all brothers) also came to
Illinois. Their family name was FOCKEN, but they dropped that name in
the US and went by the part of their name that referred to their
father's first name: CLAASSEN.)
her grandmother: Lena Ihnen, born Sept. 9, 1832, in Nord Uppum
families: IHNEN, SCHWITTERS, PIER in Fulkum (Nord and S"ud Uppum) and
Esens
her grandfather: Gerd Janssen Bokker, born Spril 22, 1840 in Emden
families: BOKKER and HARBERS in Emden (I have found NOTHING about this
family. His parents are supposed to have died when he was young, as
well as an older sister, and he was said to have been raised in an
orphanage and by an aunt. The church records I have found in Emden
don't include his birth, although they do cover 1840. I'm still
looking.)
her grandmother: Gesche Janssen Helmers, born Jan. 3, 1848, in Marienhafe
families: HELMERS, TAMMINGA, EDEN, and COORDES (and possibly KOKS,
JANSSEN, PETERS, and HARTZ ... I get very confused about whether I'm
finding "family" names or father's first names) in Marienhafe (and
Tj"uche)
All of these people seem to have been farmers (Warfsleute, Arbeiters,
and Hausleute (??)) except the families in Marienhafe, who seem to have
been a small dynasty of weavers.
The LDS church books for these parishes only seem to cover 1828 - 1874.
Does anyone know where I could find information that goes back further?
I don't find these places listed in the lists of Ortssippenb"ucher that
I've seen. Do these names or places fit into anyone else's research?
Several postings about Ostfriesland seem to be related to Iowa ... which
is also interesting to me, because after my grandparents were married in
Illinois, they moved to Indiana and then to northwestern Iowa (Everly,
near Spencer)-- in 1919. I know they used to go to some sort of annual
(?) "German picnic" somewhere in Iowa, and may have subscribed to a
newspaper with news from Ostfriesland (possibly the "Ostfriesische
Nachrichten" that was mentioned here.)
I'd love to hear from anyone else who is researching the same locations
or families.

I don't have the address of the Ostfriesian society on me, but email me and
I will send it to you.

Helmers (Helmerich), Eden (Edo) and Coordes (Coord) are probably patronymics, so can be
found throughout Friesland. Tamminga is genuinely unusual. My family tree includes:
Cordes, Gretke Sophia m. Iken, Johann Albers on May 13, 1788 in Ksp.Sengwarden, Kr.Friesland
Eden, Gerd m. Christina, Stiencke abt 1740 in Ksp.Jever, Kr.Friesland
Helmers, Helmerich m. Zu Eyhausen, Anne in 1661 in Ksp.Zwischenahn, Kr.Ammerland
Helmers, Hille m. Müller, Johan on Nov 11, 1655 in Ksp.Zwischenahn, Kr.Ammerland
Helmers, Hille m. Garrenholdt, Johan on Jun 18, 1689 in Ksp.Zwischenahn, Kr.Ammerland
Tammenga, Mettje Hinrichs m. Blum, Niklaus Hinrichs of Hage, Kr.Aurich abt 1841
