According to Hans Bahlow's german surname encyclopedia, the first use of the
Ortlib name (without the e) was in Zurich in 1209. Rostock 1257 Ortlev.
Breslau 1360 Ortlip.
Common name from the Upper Rhein to Silesia. Also it was the name of
Kriemhild's and Erzel's son.

The surname ORTLIEB comes from the old Germanic given name Ortlieb (Ortlipp,
Ortlep, Ortlepp, Ortleb, Ordtlieb).

The Ort part here means the tip of a spear or sword. The Lieb here refers to a
dear child or heir. In other words, "inheritor of the spear"

The name goes back to the Nibelungenlied, the Lay of the Nibelungs, the famous
epic poem, where the son of Etzel and Kriemhild is Ortlieb.
