Hi all,
I have an ancestor that came from Leverne(sp?) Prussia. This got me
thinking, is current Germany the same as the former Prussia? If not
where exactly was Prussia and when was the name changed? I assume that
Prussia had different boundaries. Does a map exist of Prussia around
1850-1900?
Thanks for any help.

Not to offer short shrift to this topic but you've opened a can of
worms which should be preceded by a look at a couple history books or
a little googling on the net. Just one brief note. Prussia was
officially dissolved by the allies after WWII and most of its land was
given to Poland and Russia in the great move westward of those powers.

Karl,

Your ancestor most probably comes from LEVERN (please note the slightly
different spelling - without the last character "e") in Westphalia, Prussia
in the time you refer to in your message.

Today it is part of the community Stemwede and is located in the German
state North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Use i.e. Google Maps and search for "Levern, Germany" (without the quotes)
to find were it is located.

More information can i.e. be found here
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levern

Near the bottom of this site you will find a photo of the church of Levern
and there's also a link "Historische Ansichtskarten von Levern" (historical
postcards of Levern) - follow it.

Have fun,
Vera Nagel, Germany
