From what I understand, the Bischopry of Muenster conducted a STATUS
ANIMARUM in the years 1748/1749 that listed all catholic families in
the all (?) kirspels of the Bischopry. Some of the priests did a good
job, but some others didn't seem to care much about proper
administration and/or handwriting, so depending on the kirspel you are
looking for, you could be lucky or not.

Status = State of (like the State of the Union, or Solid State)
Anima = Soul, Animarum is Olural, genetive case
thus STATUS ANIMARUM = State of the Souls, and I would assume, it was
kind of a parish census
Hello all,
you make me curious about what it means. I did not study Latin, but a
few words I know. Of course, if you translate it word by word it means
state of the souls. But I think it could also be the Latin expression
for a catholic holiday *All Souls Day* which is on November, 2.
In different sources I saw only *animarum* and I saw *animarum
commemoratio* and both were the All Souls Day (Allerheiligen).
Hello, Mr. pmetz35, you asked for the solution. Please, tell us the
result of this Status Amimarum. I think we need the information to be
sure what was meant.
'Status Animarum' is a census/status report/listing of souls, i.e. the people
in a Roman Catholic parish over whom the parish priest had authority, or
in other words the 'cure of their souls' (i.e. their spiritual welfare).
The common English translation is parish census. The Latin's literal meaning
is 'current state[ment] of [the number and other data] the souls' with the
Church's term for a person, a soul, really being the eccesiastical term for
a human being as that is what is most important about each of us in the
eyes of the Church (at least the Roman Catholic Church).
All Souls' Day refers to a feast day, 2 November, in honour of the Church
Expectant of Heaven, i.e. the departed souls awaiting the Day of Judgment.
The Church is made up of three elements: the Church Militant here in Earth
(as the Anglican Prayer Book puts it in 17th century 'poetic' language);
the Church Expectant of Heaven (i.e. those awaiting a decision from the
Almighty); the Church Triumphant in Heaven (i.e. the canonised saints and
any other fortunates who have already gained entry beyond the Pearly Gates).
Cheers, Richard

For Catholic parishes, there were five registers enjoined by the ROMAN
RITUAL (RITUALE ROMANAE, 1897):
"The pastor will kjeep parish registers of
- Baptisms
- Confirmations
- Marriages
- Deaths
and also will take care to make accurately, in so far as possible, a
register of the
- State of Souls" (Census of families)
In the nineteenth century, only the first two registers were mandatory;
the last three were optional except for the death register in churches
where there were burials.
This State of Souls was often not kept in the U.S.. Where it was it was
mostly in ethinc parishes (German, Polish, Itlaian, etc).
"FORM FOR DESCRIBING THE STATE OF SOULS
in the fifth book
It may be made in this way:
In the year _____), the ____ day of the month of____, in the street or
road or village N. in the hosue of Paul N. or the house rented by Paul
N., live
Chr. Paul N., son of Peter, age ___ years, etc.
Chr. Appolonia his wife, daughter of James N., age ____years, etc.
C. Dominic their son, age ____ years, etc.
C. Lucy their daughter, age ___ years, etc.
C. Chr. Anthony, son of N., servant, age___years, etc.
C. Catheriine N., daughter of N., maidservant, age ___years, etc.
Martin, son of N., age ____ years, etc.
(Sacraments received: C., Communion; Chr. Confirmation)"

in Wilmington, Delaware, presented at National Genealogical Society 1997
Conference, Valley Forge.
My pastor never even heard of the State of Souls. Not much kept in
U.S., except, as noted, in ethinc parishes.
Too bad.
What a wonderfuil source of information. Congratulations to those who
can connect to this parish register.

I do not (yet) know the background as to the spiritual census of 1749,
but I do know it was ordered by the ruling Fürstbischof of Münster.
This was Clemens August who held authority over and owned the
following titles and functions: Duke of Bavaria, Prince-bishop of
Paderborn, of Münster (1719), of Cologne (1723), of Hildesheim (1724),
of Osnabrück (1728).
I presume that the order came down from above to get a better handle
on who could pay more taxes. Clemens was living high on the hog, as
were most rulers of his day, and income to pay for it was always a
problem. The times were pretty much a keeping up with the Jones' type
environment were were bigger and more castles were the order of the
day.
So, while I agree that the Status Animarum was a census excersise
given the pastors to deliver upon, under the guise of a spiritual
census, there were other ideas as to money in the background.
Just the other day I ordered films of the Status Animarum taken in
Harsewinkel (Westphalia) and the one from Essen & Cappeln in
Oldenburg. We'll see what these things look like in the original form.

I don't know what "STATUS ANIMARUM" means, but if think it is "All Souls
Day" then you are not right, because nov 2, 1749 was a sunday. And when
Nov 2 is a sunday then "All Souls Day" is on the next day Nov 3.
