The Jan Carel is definetively Dutch, so is the ships name "Amelisvaart" .
There is a Dutch newsgroup, like this one go: soc.genealogy.benelux He
most likely was a mercenary (soldier) we call that now I think for the Dutch
Indies Company, also know as K.N.I.L. in Netherland, born in Germany.
Explain too and tell the dutch fellows as much as you know, in other words
tell what you know about your ancestor, you wil be suprised with all the
help you wil get.
On the other hand if you are stingy with your information you wil get an
stingy answer, makes sense he. :-))

All information directs to the Netherlands except the place of birth in
Hildesheim, a German city. The date of birth is probably before 1740. Then
the churches kept the records. You could enquire at:
Ev. Kirchenkreisamt
Klosterstr.6
31134 Hildesheim
or:
Gesamtverband der kath. Pfarrgemeinden
Domhof 17
31134 Hildesheim
for appropriate archives or a direct lookup and confirmation of date of
birth and data on parents etc.
