Hello,
We are looking for the parents and/or siblings of Heinrich Sofge, born Feb
13, 1820, Wangelnstedt, Germany. Immigrated to Galveston, Texas aboard the
ship Mercur in 1845/1846 with his future wife Freidereca Rachermann (born
1823, Hohe, Braunschweig) They settled in Horton Town, Texas which later
became New Braunsfels. He later married Anna Willmann (born 1829, Germany).
Heinrich died Mar 23, 1885 in a san antonio hospital - the result of a
pitchfork accident in New Braunsfels. Heinrich MAY be descended from Johann
Ernst Zofftje (born abt. 1715 and married to Ilsa Margaretha Eilers.) Thanks

Germany telephone directory at http://www.dastelefonbuch.de has only one
Sofge listing for the whole of Germany.
However, there are some Söffge (Soefge) listings, as well as Soffke
listings. Some of the listings are quite near Wangelnstedt, from 15 to 30
km (9 to 18 miles) away. Possibly, some of these people might be able to
help you in your search.
There are no Rachermann nor Zofftje listings.

The time frame looks like he was with the settlement promoted by Prince Karl of Solms-Braunfels. There may be something helpful in the Sophienburg Archive in New Braunfels. The correspondence connected with that venture has been translated to English and is indexed there. The originals are at Yale Uni in New Haven, Connecticut, but the S file has been lost, so unless he corresponded with someone whose name did not begin with S and it got filed there, you are out of luck.
If the Braunschweig emigrant left in 1846 instead of 1845, you may find information about her in "Auswandererlisten des ehemaligen Herzogtums Braunschweig ohne Stadt Braunschweig und Landkreis Holzminden 1846-1871" by Fritz Gruhne. Translation: List of Emigrants from the Former Duchy of Braunschweig, except the City of Braunschweig and Holzminden County 1846-1871. A look in the index may be helpful in case a relative left in 1846 or after. I think the index is online, and the book is on microfilm at the Family History Library and can be ordered to a Family History Center near you.
