I am looking for the city or town in Germany that my Grandparents came
from. They came to United States in 1890 with one child. I was told to check
for the city on the naturalization papers or citizenship papers, which I have
done but all it tells me is they were born in Germany in 1863 ( no town
named ) and landed in New York July 1890. Can anyone tell me how to find the
town they lived in Germany ?.

Thank You

Hi,
this is not the best way to do that.
Because you never know which adress to write and are you willing to
write 257 Letters to find out one?? And how long will it take to get
an answer?
Better way: Search the passengers list for the ship they were coming
to the USA. Most of the time you will find out the Origin of the
people. At least a hint.

Is it possible they went back to Germany to visit relatives after becoming
citizens here? If they did, they would need a passport. The passport
applications have a lot of detailed information which may help.

Did they have any other children? I found a place of birth for each parent
on a child's baptism certificate (birth certificates should have that
information, too).

As mentioned, if you can find the ship and the port from which they sailed,
you might be able to find something to help. If not on the passenger list
here, perhaps from the German side. If they sailed from Hamburg, those
lists are sometimes more detailed than those here.

Try to find the ship they came with to New York (Ellis Island!).
Then find the harbor in Europe where they entered the ship. Try to
find embarkment lists at that harborplace and try to find your
ancetors in these lists. Ther you perhaps can find their place of
origin.

For what it's worth, I've never found the town of origin of my ancestors on
a passenger list. At best, it found a country. Perhaps later
immigration records give that info, but not for those of 1890 and
earlier. At least for my ancestors.

Ellis Island didn't open until 1892, so the lists on the Ellis Island
website start then. We have two indexes for the Port of New York for 1890:
]
1. Germans to America, published volumes or on CD. The CD data is also
available by subscription on genealogy.com.

2. New York Passenger Lists 1851-1891, available by subscription on
ancestry.com.

Neither is 100% accurate or 100% complete, of course, but both are
extremely helpful. The city is sometimes on the passenger list.

If the ship sailed from Hamburg, you are in luck as the Hamburg Passenger
Lists list the place of birth or last residence. Currently, 1890 to 1906 is
indexed online at
http://www.ltyr.hamburg.de/index/1,2709,JGdlbz0zJA__,00.html
The indexes and lists, 1850-1934, are also available on Family History
Library film.

The place of origin is also sometimes found in U.S. church records, on
tombstones, in obituaries, personal papers, old letters, back of
photographs, records of a German-American society, German language
newspapers in the places in the U.S. where the immigrant lived, etc.

The U.S. census in 1920 asked for the city or province/state/region +
Germany, and in 1930 the census taker was instructed to put
* Germany, if the place was still in Germany, or
* the country in which the birthplace is now located (Belgium,
Czechoslovakia, Danzig, Denmark, France, Lithuania, Poland), or, if it
cannot be ascertained,
* the province, state, or city as when born + Germany.

You should also try to find every living descendant of the immigrant.
Sometimes only one person knows the birthplace of the immigrant, or has the
only copy of a document the immigrant brought with him/her.

Good luck,

Hello Harold,
For some tips on locating a German immigrant's hometown in Germany see...

Basic Research Guide for German Genealogy
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/outline.html

Scroll down to where it says, "Find your Immigrant Ancestor."

Good luck with your search.

Joe

Have you looked in the church records in New York? I assume that they lived
in NYC. St. Matthews and St. Peters are two large german churches in NYC.
