Hello,

Are there any German or Alsatian archives for emigrants to Henri (de) Castro's
Castroville colony in Texas, USA in the 1840's? I need information on some
individuals who went to Castroville in the late 1840's.

1. Antoine STROSSER, b. 1 August 1826 Hirtzfelden, Alsace (now in the
arrondissement of Guebwiller, departement du Haut-Rhin, RF). He received
permission to emigrate to Texas 21 September 1846. My family called him Anton.
Married in Texas to Labertha RUEDE, b. 29 August 1837 in or near Weisbaden.

2. Paul STROSSER, b. 1813 Hirtzfelden. Received permission to emigrate to Texas
21 September 1846 with wife Katharina (age 30) and child Katharina (age 3/4
year). Listed as Paul STROTHER in a listing of Castroville residents. Probably
a brother or cousin to Antoine/Anton (1.).

3. Therese STROSSER, b. 1800 Hirtzfelden. Received permission to emigrate with
her 3 children to America 6 February 1850. A sister or cousin to the above
emigrants (2. and 3.)?

4. Gregory HERMANN. Origin unknown. A farmer in Castroville until the drought
and Asiatic cholera epidemic (c1848-1850), then moved to San Antonio, Texas,
USA.

5. David HERMANN. Same data as his brother Gregory (4.).

NOTES:

Anton STROSSER (1.) was my direct ancestor. Data for the STROSSERs comes from
a family story and the emigration data comes from "The Alsace Emigration Book"
by Cornelia Schrader-Muggenthaler, quoted to me by Michael Palmer of the German
Genealogical Society of America. Michael Palmer also states that "Labertha" was
not a German name, but that the name we have for Anton's wife.

Records exist for Gregory and a George HERMANN, as well as Paul STROTHER
(STROSSER), in Medina County TX USA (where Castroville is located). Other
information for the HERMANNs above (4. and 5.) comes from a family story. I am
actually interested in their sister, my ancestor Caroline HERMANN, who along
with more family members joined the brothers (c1852?) after they had moved to
San Antonio, Texas, USA around 1850. Caroline HERMANN first married the widower
Sebastiano KUENTZ/K"UNTZ at age 15, and after he died married 31 January 1878
my ancestor John David WEIGAND at St. Joseph's (Catholic) Church in San Antonio
TX. She had children from both KUENTZ/K"UNTZ and of course WEIGAND.

Thank you,
Rick
