My uncle was a German named 'Horst'.
I have a pitcher or stein which has a German saying on it that I have been
unable to get translated. I would appreciate help with this.
It reads: 'Reiner Wein und gutes Bier
Sind des Wirtes fchonfte Zier'
The pitcher is a family heirloom, but I do not know if the saying pertains
to the family or is just a nifty saying.
Thanks for the help in advance.
May this be a most glorious day for you!

The correct reading of the text is:
Reiner Wein und gutes Bier
Sind des Wirtes scho"nste Zier.
The old German "long s" is likely to be misread as an "f".
The translation would be like
Pure wine and good beer
are the host's prettiest ornament.

The word before "Zier" should be spelled "schoenste"

Hello Lynn:
It is indeed a nifty saying. The penultimate word in the second line
should read "schönste". Because a bit of poetic license has been
applied to achieve rhyming, it cannot be translated verbatim. It
means: Serving unadulterated wine and a good beer are an innkeeper's
finest virtues.

My guess: Clear Wine and Good Beer
are the best virtues of a tavernkeeper.

Pure wine and good beer are a host's best ornament [today we would say:
advertisement].

Reiner Wein und gutes Bier
Sind des Wirtes schönste Zier
In my humble English:
Pure wine and good beer
are the innkeeper's most beautiful honour
