A "grand duchy" is a territory ruled by a grand duke or grand duchess;
a grand duke or grand duchess is a noble ranking "just below a king",
according to my dictionary.

If you haven't yet bought a good English dictionary, please do --
it's an indispensable tool for an English-speaking genealogist.

A Grand Duchy is ruled by a Grand Duke, just as a Kingdom is ruled by a
King or a Principality by a Prince.

The German term for Grand Duke is Grossherzog.
The German term for Grand Duchy is Grossherzogt(h)um.

Your grandfather was not necessarily born in the capital city
Luxemb(o)urg, but somewhere within the country, the Grand Duchy of
Luxemb(o)urg.
