I have seen a lot of references to "Hessian" and in fact have possibly
traced some roots to Hesse Kassel. Would anybody be able to direct me to
the meaning of "Hesse?" What type of region is this? I just thought it was
an area in Germany? Is there more I should know?

Thanks.

Lorelle, an explanation on two terms you inquired about. Hessian- This term
was used to apply to the German soldiers in German units who fought for Great
Britain during the Revolutionary War. The majority of those troops came from
the German principality Hesse Cassel/Kassel, hence Hesse became Hessian.
Hesse- Besides Hesse Cassel/ Kassel, there was also Hesse Hanau. I do not know
of the meaning or significance of Hesse. Regards, John

Have a look at Don Watson's Hesse site at http://web.nstar.net/~dwat6911,
or the mirror site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~deuhes.

Hessen (in English Hesse, adjective Hessian) is a German federal state.
The name derives from an old Germanic tribe living there already before
the Romans arrived or Charlemagne's Franks occupied its territory.

Hessian refers to that area of Germany which became the seat of power
through the ages supported probably by the economic prosparity of the upper
Rhine river. The success of these families/ peoples brought about the use of
their own security force - the Hessian Army. Maybe because they were related to
to the Hapsburgs ruling England,and/ or for mercinary reasons did they wind up
fighting in the American Revolution. Hesse Hanau was the induction point for
new recruits. Thats MY take on that history after living in Wiesbaden for three
years.

I'm always suggesting people should look things up in the encyclopedia instead
of relying on postings, since some people post the most unusual and creative
versions of history. I'm sure the Queen would be very surprised to learn that
the Catholic "Habsburgs rul[ed] England"!!

Hi Lorelle and other readers,

a story unfavourable for my ancestors is that they transported on
their floats the poor boys (not volunteers) river Main and Rhine
downwards to the Netherlands form where they took the boat to America.
So my ancestors earned 2 times money selling the wood of ther floats
and transporting the unvolunteers.

Cordially,
