No, I'm not "involved in finding out family names", but I do know a little
about my own. My Schraders go back to Bremerhaven-> Hannover->Stederdorf->
Peine->"Ohlendorf im Hannoverische" (ca. 1700)
The name Schrader supposedly is derived from, in most cases, from an old
north German word meaning a "maker of outer clothing. The name seems to be
centered in the L"uneburg-Hannover area, (and perhaps east and north
of there) with the dialecticly different
spellings of Schr"oder and Schr"ader being used in other areas.
There is a Schrader Society, founded back in the 1920's active in
Germany, but I am the only member active on the internet that I know of. I
have attended a couple of their annual gatherings.
Hans Bahlow's "Deutsches Namenlexikon" says:Schrader(hamburg
oft)ostf"al. Variante zu Schr"oder (mittelniederdeutsch schroder), sehe
dies! Albert Scrader 1379 L"unebg., Hs Swider schrader 1453 Hann., H.
Jackenstricker schradere 1438 Duderstadt.
Schr"oder niederdeutsch oft), Schr"oer, Schr"oors, Schreurs (niederrhein),
auch Schrader (ostf"al.), meint im allg. den Schneider....
