I've been getting Civil War records of my Great-Uncles (who were
at leashalf-German; maybe more). They both had gray eyes and black
hair! Is this possible for a German?? (My father had black hair and brown eyes.)Thank you very much.

People came and went off over the centuries. From Skandinavia (vikings)
Eastern Europe (slavics), southern europe (Romans), Israel, everywhere

You'll find blond, brown, black and red haired people here, and the colors
of their eyes will differ as well.
To tell someone's origin merely by its appearance is impossible.

Hi!
I do believe it is possible for someone of German descent to have grey
eyes and black hair......I am about 9/10s German, and I do! At least, I
did have-til my two sons became teenagers! Now, I am nearly whiteheaded
(heehee)!

My Grandmother (who is still living) is full German, she always had
black hair and light eyes. It's
all in the genes. Her sister (full blooded) was blond, with green
eyes.

You know that there were Dark Germans and Light Germans, as well as
High Germans and Low
Germans. My Grandmother's family was of the High German class.

So take your pick.

Heavens! Looks like you've been watching too many WWII movies &
specials!

Contrary to what Heir Hitler thought was the Germanic 'ideal', the
Germanic population is just as diverse as any other.

My personal German ancestry doesn't include a single blonde, blue-eyed
person in the bunch - and that's at least a dozen different lines from
north, south, east, and west Germany.

Your ancestor was just as much German as any other. Don't worry about it
& be pleased that you have a physical description of him.

Happy hunting!

I don't know what grandma told you but high 'German' and low 'German'
refer to language not social class.

(This is addressed to L.E. Purchase - sorry, I'm just being too lazy right
now to look up your e-mail address)

I did not answer this question when it came up first because it upset me
quite a bit.
A simple look at a photograph of Hitler himself should actually give you
the answer !
(Ok, he was an Austrian, but these distinctions are quite recent...)

Why shouldn't it be possible? There are Germans of every type, hair
color, eye color, height, weight, and shape - just as in all
European countries.

Not aware that high german is a *class* - what does it mean? Usually
it means the type of dialect spoken, and derived from the location.
Low german was spoken in the low lands of the North, high german in
the higher lying areas of the south.
