Mr. Cline, thank you for your answer = it is not clear enough! Ineed the name
and dates of this child born in 1886 (This name might be a family name and
could help in the research)
I need the name and dates of the child's mother -and whatever you know about
her, This is very important: we have to find out if she was of german
descendance or if he met her in this country. If he met her in Germany,if she
was,may be,from Hamburg as well she might have beenan unsuitable choice for
this family and may be this couple made a choice to go to America....and to
forget about the Nottemohm family.
This family,by the way,is known as very decent, linked to a lot of
well-to-do-families and belongs itself into Hamburg;s high society. Nottebohm
have or had businesses all over the world,a number of men were doctore at a
time, when few people went to college,
Yesterday I gave you the name of Carl Johann Friedrich Nottebohm, born 1866,son
of Carl Ludwig Nottebohm (1841-1893) and Johanna Elisabeth Bezoet de Bie (no
dates)
In the entire genealogy Nottebohm he is the only one appearing to be single.
His date of death is unknown, where all his siblings appear with all dates and
descendands and their dates! This usually happens when somebody went to another
country, was outed of a family for one reason or another(sometimes, because this
was the bad apple in the family or because this person married somebodythat was
of "lower" birth.
For whatever reason:he could and might be your Charles Henry Nottbohm -and I
will explain.
This might be a puzzle and I want to try to solve it. Therefor I will try to
give you some ideas about what might have happened.
Obviously your guy has changed his name to an english version of his german
name.He might not have had any intention to ever go back to Germany.
He might have fled Germany to marry the girl of his dream, that was not accepted
in his german family,
He might have had a fall out with his are a lot of possibilities to reason one
way or another.
The german spelling is Nottebohm for sure, The name Nottbohm is therefor either
a spelling error made by,for example,the registering officer at,may be,Ellis
Island (This officer might not have spoken German - this was so many times the
case with immigrants: they are carrying today misspelled names, because of an
ignorant registering officer!)
-or has been changed on purpose.
- to be americanized
- because this guy Charles wanted a change of identity in another land.
Obviously he had no problem to change his first names to an english version.
In the german genealogy Nottebohm there is nowhere a Carl Heinrich = Charles
Henry Nottebohm to be found.
But, again, may be Charles Henry was indeed Carl Johann Friedrich and simply
did not like his nameJohann to begin with,or rejected it as tt German or didn't
like the the english version John,,,,
He was changing his last name and his first,he might as well change his second
first name entierely,,,,,
May be he was thinking of his aunt Henriette Elisabeth Nottebohm
(1843-1899),sister of his father.
This aunt married 1866, Carl Johann Friedrich Nottebohm"s year of birth a
Johannes Huepeden (1829-1896) May be J>F>N> (1866- ) loved her very much,
May be he liked the idea of carrying her first name Henriette in the male form
Henry.
May be she had taken care of him when he was a baby, before having her own
children....
May be this aunt helped him to flee from Germany, helped him to pay the
passage, helped financially, encouraged him to marry his girlfriend and to move
to America? Who knows!
If we are on the right track,I have to point out something else:
Carl Ludwig Otto Nottebohm died in 1893 (CJF Nottebohm's father (1866-) This
was the year your Nottbohm put his name on a building in Chicago....
So, why would this young man go to Germany just after his father's death in
1893 and stay there until his own death in 1900?
Was his marriage on the rocks?
Was he reaccepted in his family?
Did he have to take over any of his father's businesses?
It is unknown when C<J<F< Nottebohm (1866-) 's mother died.
But his uncle Huepeden died 1896.
May be C<J<F> Nottebohm (1866-) went over to Germany after that?
More likely he went over to be with his aunt Henriette Elisabeth
Nottebohm,married Huepeden:she died the 28th of February 1899!
It is unclear "you know a Charlotte Henriette Nottebohm!
There is indeed one:
Charlotte Henriette Elise Nottebohm, called Hetty, born 9/30/1886,death date not
known to me, She married 5/7/1907 an Ascan Hugo Brandt (1877-1960)
Her parents were Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Nottebohm (1836-1915) and Sara Maria
Elise Weber (1851-1945)
These parents married 1869 and had 8 children - Charlotte Henriette Elise
Nottebohm being the youngest one.
She was, even though 20 years younger than C<J>F> Niottebohm (1866- ),his first
cousin.
Their parents C<F<W> Nottebohm (1836-1915) and C<L<O< Nottebohm (1841-1893)
were siblings.
Please, give me the requested informations. Do you have any documents in German?
I was born and raised in Hamburg/Germany and could help you with ,may be, an
unknown language for you!
By the way: This family Nottebohm has a coat of arms,of course,I have a copy.
Mareike von der Heyde.
