My 4th greatgrand mother was Anna Katharina Bartels, born in Riga 1682 and died
there 1730. She was the daughter of the merchant Hans Bartels and Anna
Pfortmann.

Bartels, while not a common name, is not all that unusual to be found,
especially in northern Germany.
