Can anyone advise me about parish records (or their equivalent) for
Heligoland? My GG Grandfather was born about 1848 & all documents (census &
UK marriage licence) indicated that he was born in Denmark. The 1901 census
however states him as being from 'Heligoland - British subject'

I understand that the island was a British colony between approx 1830 (when
Britain took it from Denmark) until 1890 when Britain swopped it with
Germany for Zanzibar.

Would any records exist for the period when it was a British Colony? Would
they be available in Britain or in Germany? Why is it likely that he
described himself as Danish until 1901?

He lived until 1935 by the way & was an avid teetotaller.

Thanks

I would contact the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein and point the questions
there. Informations about their postal address and their holdings at
