The following was found on a piece of paper:

Fran Johan Friedrich Balk
Radduhn
Kreis Arnswalde
Reg: Lez: Frankfort (could be [Reg: Bez:
Frankfort])
a/o (What is
a/o?)
Preuszen
via, Hamburg,

I am assuming this is an address. I could not find Raduhn or Rietzig on a
map near what was Arnswalde nor a name translation for these on my map of
Poland. Are they small towns? The time period was around the 1860's. I also
have "Garde-Corps" papers with the following information in the heading:

1te Garde=Infanterie=Divifion. 2te Garde=Infanterie=Brigade.
2tes Garde=Landwehr=Regiment. 1tes Bataillon (Berlin).
( " " indicates handwritting)
Der Landwehr "Gefreite Wilhelm Kersten"
aus "Rietzig" Kreis "Arnswalde" Regierungs=Bezirt
"Frankfurt" geburtig, mird hiermit bis auf Weiteres nach
"Raduhn" Kreis "Arnswalde" Regierungs=Bezirt Potsdam entlaffen.
(Potsdam is crossed out and Frankfurt is written in)

Does anyone know of these locations and a map that would show them?

try Radun

correct - Kreis Arnswalde is/was in the socalled Neumark

> Reg: Lez: Frankfort (could be [Reg: Bez: Frankfort]) a/o

correct too - Kreis Arnswalde belonged to the Regierungsbezirk
(governmental district) of Frankfurt/Oder
> (What is a/o?)

a/o means "an der Oder" - at the river Oder (to differ from
Frankfurt am Main) check out German news and you will hear
about the "Hochwasser" (flood) near Frankfurt/Oder.

Kreis Arnswalde belonged to the Province of Brandenburg until
1938, afterwards (until 1945) it was part of the province of
Pomerania.
Since 1701 Arnswalde belonged to the kingdom of Prussia. (Preuszen)

Rietzig is also in Kreis Arnswalde

Arnswalde is now something like Choszno (sp?)

> Are they small towns?

Radun and Rietzig yes, Arnswalde was a city. (a few thousands inhabitants)

BTW not too many church records from Kreis Arnswalde survived...

It's been 20 years since you posted this so I'm not sure if you'll ever see my reply but my Kersten family is from Rietzig and I just found a fraction of an old map that shows the cities how they were back then (Arnswalde is now Choszczno, Poland). I think the way to write where they were from is Rietzig, Arnswalde, Brandenburg, Prussia. This post shows your name but not an email so if you happen to get this, email me back and I'll send you the image. I'd also like to compare notes if this is your family.
