All my life I have been lead to believe that my sir name was German.
Reciently, I have been told that the name Schaaf is probably Dutch. I
know that my great-great grandparents came from a port in Germany,
however, I did not find out where they were from. I have also been told
that lots of people departed from a German port, but actually came from
some other country.

If anyone can give me any more information, I would appriciate it.

Thanks in advance

Patricia or Paul?,

I do know something about Friesland/The Netherlands where the name does
occur. There are some variations like Schaafsma, van der Schaaf. I found
some of these people listed as being carpenters. A schaaf is a carpenter
instrument which is used on wood. Please look up this word because I do
not know the translation.

Let me know what his first name was. This might lead to the proper area
he/she came from. Some names are very local.

Happy hunting

P.S. I do come from Friesland and could give you some information where
to go or write for more information. My estimate is that there were
quite some people who took the surname Schaaf or a variation. But there
is always hope. If you do have a name around 1800 then there are books
in which you could look up the name. You might be lucky. There is also a
change that he did not come from Friesland but from another part of The
Netherlands, in which case it becomes more difficult.

Paul -

I don't know if the name SCHAAF is Dutch, but there are plenty of them in
Germany today. The name goes well back into the 1600's in Obergleen, near
Alsfeld, in Hessen

I have found in book "Surnames" A French Hugonot fled to Germany in the
time of the revolt-married a German woman, taking the Schaaf name. In
German Immigrant Shiplog list 1850-1854 the Ports are Havre, Baden and
Antwerp. I will look up any names if you wish. We were told Schaaf meant

My maiden name is Schaaf. I have traced my paternal ancestors to Baden Baden, Germany. It's interesting what you say about the name being Dutch because my maternal ancestors came from The Netherlands and were Dutch.
