Hello everyone,

I decided it was time to try to find out more info on the Bischoff's in
my tree.
This one is a toughy.

I do know Bischoff can be Bishop.

I have an Adam Bischoff married to Elizabeth (Mary) Himmel.
So, I looked for them in the NYC census.

I think I found them in 1860, but everything looks really messed up......
Adam Bischopp, age 66 born in Saxony, Musician
Mary, age 15 born in Michigan (his wife was Eliz or Mary) couldn't be 15
Adolf, age 8 born in Michigan
Louis, age 5 born in NY

Now, here they are in 1870
1870 10th Ward New York City -Election District
Adam Bischoff, Age 50, Musician, $7,000, $200, Saxony Occupation: Musician
Mary, age 50, Keeps House Born in Saxony
..........................................................Deaf
William, Age 24, Bootfitter .........., $200 Born in Saxony
Rosa, Age 28, Keeps House born in Bavaria
Adolph Age 19, Works in Lamp Store Born in Saxony
Louis, Age 15, Apprenctice Jeweler, Born in New York
*Note Adolph's middle name was Gustave and he was called "Gus".

This is correct...........

Louis Napoleon Bischoff's marriage cert states his mothers surname was
Himmel.

In 1880 the only Adam I found was Adam Bischoff, Male age 64, Musician
born in Prussia
Admina Bischoff, Wife age 44 born in Prussia
I can only presume that's not them.
---------
I know there is a site that shows countries and cities where names were
popular.. Hope I said that correctly.
Thinking there may be some town or area in Saxony that had both
Bischoff's and Himmel's.

Since Saxony stinks for getting info I think that's the first thing to do.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks a Bunch
Carol

Hope I haven't embarassed myself with this question. I do that sometimes :)

This place might well be Keula, nowadays part of 99173 Helbeduendorf.
The german telephondirectory lists no Bichoff or Himmel at Keula, but

in the area of 25 km around Keula

80 Bischoff
16 Bischof
1 Himmel

in the area of 50 km around Keula (including the capital of
Thuringia: Erfurt)

273 Bischoff
115 Bischof
18 Himmel

All over Germany there are 8623 Bischoff, 3653 Bischof und
1030 Himmel listed in the directory.

Hello Bernard,

Yes that is the site I was looking for.

This is interesting because my Heymann's were from Thuringen, Sonneberg.

Many thanks for giving me that information.

Carol
