'Kuefer' or better 'Küfer' with (u umlaut) is not to be mixed up with
'Käufer' (=buyer). Küfer is the German equivalent of English 'cooper'
(cellarman).
Low German, which did not experience the Old high German consonant
shift, has the word 'Küp(p)er', which is even closer to the English.

I am doing the best I can at the moment.
However, this is not necessarily my best moment.

Kuefer means cooper or barrelmaker.

There are numerous regional words for this occupation in Germany:
Kuefer
Kuebler
Schaeffler
Buettner
Fassbinder
Boettcher
Pottmacher
etc.

According to my resources, Kuefer means "cooper, or cellarmann".

You probably did not find it in your dictionary because it usually is
written without the "e". Two dots are written above the "u" indicating
an "e" follows the "u".

Hope this helps you.

P.S.: For basics in English you may want to see website:

According to my research material (which is quite extensive), kuefer
means "cooper or cellarman". You probably did not find it because it is
written kufer but then has the two dots above the "u" indicating an "e"
follows the "u".

Glad I could help.

Hi Laura,
Kuefer (or Kufer with Umlaut) is another name for Boettcher, used in
the west/southwest of Germany.(+Swiss)
The Kuefer (or Boettcher, Faßbinder, Binder, Kuebler) makes barrels, i
think the english word is cooper.

Hope that helps

Laura,
A Kuefer was or is a member of a very noble guild/profession.
He is or was a skilled wood craftsman who created wooden (mostly oaken)
barrels to be used for storing beer or wine.
Maybe someone told you this already.

And it's "Kufe", not "Keufe" or "Kuefe".

My mother's maiden name was Kiefer and I found that this definition
did go with the definition "wine-keeper". Does someone know if the
names Kuefer and Kiefer are of similar origin? Also...does the name
Cooper relate to these names? Thank you.
